We Want To Be A Part Of It

It was the year 2012.
We started spreadin' the news and leavin' today. A birthday was to be had in the town of all towns, New York, New York. We wanted to be a part of it, in New York, New York, particularly from the top of the Empire State Building. The sun was shining and we had just gone shopping, a pastime not much liked by only one of us in the photo. Our vegabond shoes were longing to stray, right through the very heart of it, New York, New York.

We wanted to wake up in a city that never sleeps. No better place than Times Square for that. What a spectacle it was. All those people jolting this way and that, trying to get the best photo of that one billboard or giant advertisement screen that was supposedly different from all the rest.

To find we were king of the hill, top of the heap, or at a New York Yankees game in Yankee Stadium.
We really got a kick out of the two older men sitting right behind us. They were so outspoken and passionate about the game that it was hilarious listening to them banter at each other back and forth. Their team was losing, and they were very upset about something to do with either their shortstop or maybe it was the umpire making wrong calls. We may never know.

These little town blues, were melting away. Because there were classic New York hot dogs round every street corner. We were gonna make a brand new start of it, in Old New York. Because if we could make it there, we could make it anywhere. It's just up to you, New York, New York.

Or, maybe it was up to John Lennon.

Or, maybe it was up to Lady Liberty.

Or, maybe it was up to Jimi.

Or, maybe it was up to that guest we saw on the David Letterman show, Howard Stern.

Or, maybe it was up to those tennis players we saw at the US Open, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.

Or, maybe it as up to Madonna, live in concert at Yankee Stadium.

We wanted to wake up in a city that never sleeps, and find we were A number one, top of the list, king of the hill, A number one, while enjoying a nice carriage ride around central park.

Our little town blues melted away and we made a brand new start of it, in Old New York.
And if we could make it there, we could make it anywhere, it was up to you, New York, New York.

I said if we could make it there, we could make it anywhere. Just sitting at a small red table in Times Square, wearing forever loved shorts and sandals, shooting the breeze doing the much loved, possibly favorite activity of all, people watching. It was all up to you, New York, New York.
New York.
