A Finer Vacation

It was the 4th of August. There had just been a plane crash at the Dubai airport which, little did the children know, was where we were meant to be going. After a flight change and an hour cab ride, we checked into The Grosvenor House Hotel Dubai. With 750 rooms, 14 restaurants and just minutes from anywhere you could possibly want to be in Dubai, it was very much worth the detour to get there. Welcome to our room, enjoy the view of the marina and the finer side of elegance and serenity.

Our first activity post check-in at the Grosvenor, sadly did not include our mother. A boat ride excursion with a wonderful view and breakneck 360 turns in the water. We got a little wet. Not recommended for people over 40.

And then it was of course time for the megatall skyscraper and tallest structure in the world, the Burj Khalifa. Standing at 828.8 metres, construction began in 2004 and was opened to the public in 2010. Even more beautiful at night.

Time for dinner at Izakaya. Social sushi at it's best, it is the Japanese restaurant to eat at in Dubai. The most delicious food, said by Kate who is a sushi junkie so you know it must be good, and there is even a wasabi girl to spice things up.

After a most restful sleep in the comfy bed of our Grosvenor, in our adventures the following day we were guided around by a nice young man from Pakistan. He drove us around to many interesting places. The Dubai museum was most educational.

We flitted around in markets, a water taxi, the beach, saw many mosques and even the most expensive hotel we've ever seen, the Burj Al Arab Hotel shown behind us. As you can see, there's a pad for your helicopter protruding on the top right hand side. The presidential suite is the tube sticking out on the top left. Starting price is $1200 USD per night. Maybe if I sold my soul to the devil.

After another great dinner at an asian cuisine restaurant next door called the Big Buddha, where it was so posh there were pillows for our purses, we then enjoyed another well deserved and most restful sleep. There were a few solemn faces next morning at breakfast on our last day in Dubai. Sadly a vacation like this doesn't last forever.

We packed up and soon we were all back in Doha. And then, they were on their way back to the land of snow and reindeer. Another day, another excursion executed wonderfully.
