My sweet, sugary, precious, beloved's of this filthy earth. I fear I may ask you a question. If asked to define the word: Carnival, how might you approach this acute debacle? Might you like a few hints? Carnival: A festive season which occurs immediately before Lent. Carnival: A public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. Carnival: Synonymous with the word, 'orgy'... I'm sorry? While we are solving this puzzle, I might draw your attention to a rather large statue that sits at the top of a friendly little mountain entitled, "Corcovado." The statue has a name: Jesus. You may have heard of this bright young fellow. You may also have heard that he comes in many forms, this form in particular is 130 feet of soapstone. He has a bit of a weight problem, waddling in at 700 tons, but don't judge him for it. He may judge you in return. The Christ statue was also a bit demanding to make, taking 9 years from 1922-1931, at the time costing US$250 000. Today, that is just over 3 million dollars. Probably could have given him a little less lumpy chin for that price I think. Now, if you choose to come to Rio, you must see the view. However you decide to do it, make sure you are high enough to take in its diversity. Do not be fooled, Rio is not like other cities. Its many contrasting qualities are the reason it is so well known, why it has the nickname of "Marvelous City." Its people have perfected the art of living well. The city is flanked by gorgeous mountains, lush forrest and stunning beaches. If you are not enticed by its ever-tropical climate, you will be by the lure of Samba that you can extract from nearly every street corner. It has enchanted its visitors for centuries, from the end of its world famous beaches Ipanema and Copacabana, to the tips of Jesus' outstretched arms atop the Corcovado mountain. The ozzies and myself decided, making a group consensus on the best way to view this intoxicating heaven from above: Hang gliding. 'Carnaval' in Brazil is one of the best-known celebrations today. The Rio de Janeiro Carnival is considered to be the world's most famous and largest, with the Guiness World Records pegging it as the biggest popular party on the planet in 2010. While I'm at it I would like to give you the real definition of 'Carnaval' in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:
A time in which Bailey Skaret and a bunch of ozzies dress up, going mad around the city of Rio for days. Flawlessly, they combine the necessary elements of costume, alcohol, shaving cream and public urination. It is a frolicking ragbag of merriment, a spastic masquerade, a revolving circus act on a carousal that never ends. Carnaval is a time of beach, party, and dance. Fun is compulsory. Pictures are optional. Now please excuse me, whilst I go and rest my weary head. The Girl From Ipanema
